The Gar Jack and how to use it
The purpose of the Gar Jack is to hold the Gar while the nylon rope lure is being removed from his mouth. You can hang it over the side of the boat. On some boats, it works best hanging over the transom beside the motor. It also works well on the corner of a large ice chest. If you use it on a flat surface, you need to raise the front end up. You can do this by fastening a 2 X 4 on edge to the bottom, just below the notch.

To remove the lure from the Gar’s mouth, grasp the lure itself with a pliers and pull the Gar into the Gar Jack. DO NOT GRAB THE GAR BY HIS HEAD! Guide the Gar into the “V” notch of the gar Jack and pull it tight. Insert the tooth spreader into the teeth, and twist to open his mouth. This will secure the Gar in the Gar Jack. With a second pair of pliers, remove the lure a few strands at a time. If this is done with he Gar Jack over the side or transom of the boat, the Gar will simply drop back into the water when he is free. If you want to keep your Gar to eat or for a few pictures, use a large net to land him. To handle these fish safely, you need a pair of heavy leather work gloves. When you are done, return his to the lake to fight again!
